A Fresh Twist on Hydration

colorful flowers and herbs from above

Staying hydrated, while seemingly simple, is something that lots of people struggle with. From forgetting to drink it, to a downright dislike of the taste of water, many of us live in a chronic state of dehydration.

Any number of bodily processes can be helped by drinking more water: digestion, energy production, sleep (although the timing of water intake matters with this one!), and even a tendency towards lightheadedness can all be alleviated by staying properly hydrated.

A common recommendation for adequate water intake is ½ of your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 150 pounds, you should drink 75 ounces per day. Many variables affect hydration, including environmental temperature and humidity, as well as activity level, and health. For example, if you’re running a fever, your fluid needs are clearly higher. Mayo clinic suggests that if you are not thirsty, and your urine is nearly colorless, you are most likely well hydrated.

If you are one of those people that dislikes the taste of plain water, you want to help your body detox, or you just want to mix things up, try these suggested additions offered by Geraldine Olivo in her book Detox Waters (Quadrille, 2017).

Purifying Water

  • Black radish: Cleaned and thinly sliced. Black radish is said to support the liver function.
  • Peppermint: Put a teaspoon in a tea ball. Peppermint may stimulate digestion and help to calm intestinal discomfort.
  • Lemon: Juice of one lemon. Lemon supports liver function and it’s vitamin c supports the immune system.

Put all ingredients in a quart jar filled with water and infuse in the refrigerator for 12 hours.

Immunity Water

  • Eucalyptus: 2 tablespoons dried, torn leaves. A traditional herbal remedy for respiratory ailments.
  • Rosemary and Thyme: 1 teaspoon dried thyme and 3 sprigs of dried rosemary. General tonic herbs with antibacterial properties.

Refrigerate with water in a quart jar for 12 hours, serve with lemon and honey to taste.

Revitalizing Water

  • Pears: Core two pears and chop in pieces. Pears are rich in vitamin c and copper
  • Parsnips: Medium sized parsnip, thinly sliced. These root vegetables can aid in energy production in the body, and are high in manganese which is essential for bone health.
  • Lemon: Juice of one lemon. Supports emotional health and is commonly used in traditional medicine as a detoxifying agent.

Infuse all ingredients with water in a quart jar refrigerated for 12 hours.

Whose Emotions are You Feeling?

Woman crying outdoors

The other day a man stepped into the street, so I stopped my car so he could cross. Suddenly, I felt the overwhelming urge to cry—for no apparent reason. Then I looked more closely at the man walking just feet away from me. He looked like I suddenly felt. “Ahhh, these emotions are not mine.” I sent him a silent prayer, grateful that I had finally learned to tell the difference between my emotions and others.

Recently, I read an article describing the difference between an “empath” and someone who is highly sensitive. They distinguished an empath as someone who can feel the emotions of others, sometimes even physical conditions, even though they are not actually going through the same experience. Someone who is highly sensitive is someone who has a high sensory awareness and feels extremely emotional due to others, their surroundings, and visual images, even TV shows. They are similar with some variations, but either way the resulting experience can be intense and confusing. Researchers say that twenty percent of us have highly sensitive brains that respond powerfully to emotional images and our surroundings, and another two-three percent of us are actually empaths.

That twenty to twenty-three percent essentially means that to varying degrees, one out of every four or five of us is experiencing the emotions of those around us, on top of our own emotions. Many of us (especially as a child or teen) don’t even know that we are sensitive to the energies of others.  We may even be oblivious to the reality that such a thing exists. Consequently, there is a tendency to think something is wrong with us.

Those who are not empathic (parents, spouses) often think that those of us who are are over dramatic, overly reactive, and get too involved. They don’t understand why we cry when someone else in the household is depressed. They don’t understand why we can’t watch violent movies or fights on TV. In fact, my husband often points out to me, “They are just actors. It is just a movie,” while I assume fetal position on the couch, looking the other way.

Feeling other people’s feelings, being sensitive to images, wanting to cry for “no reason,” and processing emotions that do not belong to us can hit us like a ton of bricks from unexpected places at unanticipated times. If we don’t know these emotions are not actually ours, it can cause a lot of stress, depression, anxiety and confusion for both the person experiencing the emotions and those who love them.

These are particularly challenging traits to have at a time in our history when nearly everyone has strong feelings of fear, concern, hope, depression, anxiety, fatigue and divisiveness due to our current political environment. Actually, most of the world is deeply concerned. Our own emotions can be overwhelming by themselves but now, possibly more than ever before, the challenges of being empathic are amplified.  And in a personal relationship, unknowingly feeling the emotions of others can be devastating.

So what do we do about it?

First, we need to practice self-observation and self-inquiry, which leads to self-awareness. Get to know yourself well enough to be able to decipher your emotions from others. This can be as simple as asking yourself, “Is this emotion mine?”

This awareness helps to unravel what you are feeling when a wave of emotion washes over you. If it is your emotion, take responsibility for handling what needs to be handled. Cry if need be. Apologize. Forgive. Express your needs. Grieve. Make some changes. Break up. Heal the rift. Identify what the emotion is showing you.

If nothing has happened in your life to cause the emotions, if there is not a triggering event or experience, they are probably not yours. Simply understanding that can make processing the emotions easier. And knowing this offers you the choice —to process the emotions, release the emotions, or determine if another action needs to take place.

There may not be anything that needs to be done. In which case, simply be aware and breathe as the emotions pass through. If you can identify the person that the emotions actually belong to, you can use the information to offer guidance or compassion. If the emotion is coming from a loved one or housemate, you can use that wisdom to heighten your sensitivity to their needs. If it is collective emotion it may well be that as you process these feelings, meditate or pray for the planet, that you vicariously ease the pain or tension in others.

But, before you jump into caretaking of the other people, trying to solve their problems or intervening, assess the situation. You don’t want your empathy to move you toward codependency while leading other people away from personal responsibility.

Sometimes all that is necessary is a heightened sense of awareness, a few tears and some carefully sent prayers.

Tested Tricks For Getting Kids To Take Natural Supplements

When it comes to the natural supplements my family takes, I like to take a minimal approach – using real food as the foundation for good health and filling in where the body might need a little extra help. This rule especially applies to kids. On the daily (well, ok, a few times per week), I mix up […]

When You’re Hooked On an Abusive Partner and Scared to Walk Away

“We set the standard for how we want to be treated. Our relationships are a reflection of the relationship we have with ourselves.” ~Iyanla Vanzant

I’ll be honest. I knew my ex was a screwed-up guy. My head told me that not long after we met. The alarm bells were screeching. Could I hear them? Of course! Did I listen to them? No. My heart told my head to sod off and I agreed.

Here was a charismatic, gorgeous man focusing all his attention on me. I was the only one in his universe. Fireworks that would rival Sydney’s New Year’s Eve were going off. The sexual chemistry was intense. He was the best drug ever.

The high of being with him was intoxicating. Nervous butterflies were on a rampage in my stomach, which did a bit of a flip every time I saw him. And that’s how I knew he was the one. Yeah, right.

Like most Narcs, it took a while for his darker side to kick in. But when it did I was already way too hooked on him; I needed more. So, I ignored all the warning signs. The ones that were there in front of my face, with bells on.

When Mr. or Mrs. Charisma has hooked you in, they have you. Then their dark side starts to come out. They start to become a bit moody. To pick a fight, usually over something “you’ve done.” So, you start to change your behavior in anticipation.

If his anger was over something you wore, you change your wardrobe to clothes less “slutty.” If she doesn’t like your friends, you stop seeing them. But no matter what you try, nothing works. The goal posts just get moved. They find another reason to blame you for their anger.

Abusive people have all the answers as to why they treat you poorly. Past girlfriends or boyfriends have betrayed them. They’ve had a difficult childhood; bad luck has let them down. So, you believe them and keep ignoring the warning signs.

To you, this is still that gorgeous person who swept you off your feet. You can still see the good beneath the dark side. You think: all they need is someone like you to take care of them, to bring that charming side back to the fore. And that makes you feel needed, secure.

But then the abuse gets worse. When they go into a rage now, they may storm out and disappear for days. They may even show the first signs of physical abuse. A push or a shove. Something that shocks you, as it comes out of the blue. (Something they’ll later dismiss as not being violence).

But the thought of breaking up and never seeing them again terrifies you even more than how they’re treating you. Hooked in as you were by the drug of when they basked you in their sunshine, you can’t or don’t want to see the real person they are. You ignored the early warning signs, now you deny the reality. It’s true what they say. Love can be blind.

When their rage has calmed down and they reappear, you’re relieved to see them again. It helps that the remorse they now show is equal to the severity of their latest abuse. They say how sorry they are. They sob in your arms. They’re “ashamed” of what they’ve done. They’ll “never do it again.” Blah, blah, blah.

They admit that they need you more than ever to help them change. And of course, this is music to your ears. But this honeymoon period never lasts. The verbal and / or physical abuse, followed by remorse, repeats itself. Over and over, in a cycle.

This cycle of violence (emotional and/or physical) is a toxic turning of unpredictable highs and lows. With each spin, it breaks you down. Any shred of self-esteem you have starts to erode.

You feel worthless and almost deserving of their anger. You start to believe it when they say you’re to blame for it. But you somehow rationalize it all by thinking that all they need is you to fix them to make the abuse go away. All you need to do is to love them more.

You don’t realize it, but loving them has become an addiction for you. You’re addicted to an unavailable person—someone who is not there for you and who doesn’t care for you. They may even be more focused on their own addiction, to alcohol and/or drugs.

Your head might be screaming at you to leave. But you just can’t. In your heart, you feel you love you them. “They need me,” you rationalize. You might even feel guilty if you abandon them.

You are just like an addict. If you admit that your life has become out of control and walk away, you’ll lose the very thing you are addicted to. That high you get from their charismatic, remorseful, attentive side. What you need to make you feel good again. After each dreadful low, you are desperate for a ‘fix,’ that high, again.

But at some point, you will reach rock bottom—the abuse will become extreme. If they’re physically abusive, they may have even tried to kill you. My ex did, by strangling me. He wrapped his hands around my throat when I was seven months pregnant and with a demonic look in his eyes he screamed, “Die, you c***! Die.”

Like many women, even after that, I still loved him! My heart kept screaming at me not to leave him. Yes, even after he almost killed me.

If you’re lucky your head will start to outweigh your heart. You’ll stop denying that this person is no good for you. Finally, you’ll dig deep and find the courage to walk away. I did. But not before going back to him many, many times.  The drug-like pull back toward him was so great. The high, after we first reunited again, was better than the pain I felt when I was without him, alone.

When you leave an abusive person, the withdrawal feels as agonizing as, I imagine it might be, weaning off heroin. It did for me, at least. You’ve been numb for so long that a gamut of emotions pour out at once. Shame, anger, loneliness, guilt—you name it, you feel it. It hurts.

I have never sobbed like that before in my life. I was so overwhelmed by the rawness of them. But you need to feel these emotions, as painful as they are. You need to thaw out. To go cold turkey in order to recover.

Unless you look hard at why you were addicted to an unavailable person in the first place, you risk going back to them. Or replacing them with a different drug, in the form of another abusive person. Either way, like any addict, you risk losing your life.

You need to ask yourself the same questions I did:

Why is it I still love someone who abuses me? Why is it I need to numb myself with someone who is like a drug to me? Someone you know is no good for you, but is the only thing that will make you feel good again. Hopefully, like me, you’ll realize your addiction started way before you ever met this person.

I’m sure you know already that it has something to do with low self-esteem. If we don’t love ourselves, we’re attracted to those who treat us as though we are unlovable. But it’s not enough to just tell someone they need to “love themselves more.” “You need to work on your self-esteem!” That’s easier said than done. Believe me, I know.

First, you need to understand why it is that you feel you are unlovable, or not good enough. How you came to be so low in self-esteem that you let a person abuse you. Only then can you break the cycle of addiction to them and recover.

You may be like me, having grown up in a comfortable, happy home. Never having experienced verbal or physical abuse before in your life. Or you may have suffered it in your family and be repeating the negative patterns of your past. Either way, the root of low self-esteem is if, in some way, your emotional needs were not met as a child.

It might be, for example, that one of your parents had an addiction say, to work or to alcohol. The other parent was then so focused on rescuing them that neither could meet your emotional needs.

It may be as simple as having a parent who was controlling. You weren’t allowed an opinion or any feelings of your own. And if you voiced them, they shut you down, so you learned to mistrust your gut instincts over time. Or it might have been they were such perfectionists, the only way to gain approval was to be perfect in every way.

Our experiences are unique to us, so only you will know. But try to work it out.

If our emotional needs aren’t met as a child, we grow up to have that fear we’re “not good enough.” We also fear abandonment, as we know how painful that is already.

Our parents may have been there when we were kids, but couldn’t deal with us on an emotional level. So, we choose a partner whose baggage matches ours. Someone whose needs weren’t met as a child either and who is as insecure as we are. Even better if they have problems that we can rescue them from—an addiction or a traumatic past.  For if they need us, if they depend on us, then in our subconscious minds, they’re less likely to abandon us. To do what we fear most.

Besides, if we can be their rescuer, then we can focus all our attention onto them. By doing so we can deny, ignore, we can even numb our own feelings of insecurity and fears inside. It’s them that has the problem, not us! And it’s such an effective drug, we might not even be aware those feelings exist at all. I wasn’t.

The trouble is, this is a dysfunctional dance. The steps feel familiar, of course, as you’re recreating scenes from childhood to master them. But two people who are insecure are incapable of fulfilling each other’s needs.

To feel secure, both have the pathological need to feel in control. While I was ‘rescuing’ my ex, I felt in control and confident he wouldn’t leave me. But that left him feeling vulnerable, afraid I would see his flaws and walk away. So, he would need to push me away to regain his power.

Now I was the vulnerable one. Terrified he would abandon me, I would forgive him anything to get him back again. If I couldn’t, it would reinforce those painful childhood feelings I had of being unlovable. It would reveal the depth of my insecurity and fears.

And so, I tried to please him, to prove I was worthy of his love and my weakness gave him strength again. The love he then showered onto me was just the drug I needed to numb those fears away and gave me security to start rescuing him again. And so, the cycle begins.

But is this love? I had to ask myself the same. He was a man who treated me as worthless, I knew that. Yet I couldn’t leave him. I still “loved him.” Or so I thought. Until I understood that this is not love, but an addiction. An addiction to someone who could never love me, who could never meet my emotional needs.

He said he loved me all the time. But he never showed me I was lovable. I told myself, too, that I loved him. But in fact, I just wanted to rescue him, to turn him into something I had projected him to be, not who he was. A pity project, perhaps, that could distract me from how f***ed up I was.

When I finally left, I had to treat my addiction to this unavailable man the way any addict does. Go cold turkey. Thaw out. I had to feel all those painful feelings of inadequacy and insecurity. Those hideous emotions that poured out.  But that was the only way to heal.

I had to go back to the root cause of my lack of self-esteem, where it was seeded in my childhood. Not to judge my parents. Like me, they were doing the best they could at the time. But to understand how I’d come to be this way.

As painful and as hard as this is, once you get it and face those fears down, your insecurity will start to melt away.  And little by little you begin to love yourself.  I started by doing one nice thing for myself each day. Eventually, I found that self-esteem that everyone had been going on about.

You only attract someone equal to what you think you are worth.  Abusive people, who previously saw a chink in your armor, will now see you and run a mile. They’ll see that you get they’re not good enough for you.

Those people who are self-confident and don’t need you to rescue them, will no longer terrify you.  And among them will be the one, like I have since found. The person who treats you with kindness and respect. The person who meets your emotional needs and brings out the best in you.  The person who allows you to be vulnerable, but safe. They’ll never use that vulnerability as a weapon against you.

Sure, they could walk away any day. But you’ll no longer fear that. For if they do, you’ll just figure it’s not meant to be. You’ll still be there. And you’ll be enough to meet all your own emotional needs, with or without a partner.

A teenager from Wetherby is hoping to scale England’s highest mountain – a few years after chronic illness meant she couldn’t walk her dog to the end of the road without feeling exhausted.

Sophie Atkinson and three friends from Harrogate College are set to climb Scafell Pike to raise money for the ME Association charity, which supports patients and funds research into Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

The 19-year-old was diagnosed with ME, an illness which causes extreme tiredness that does not go away with rest or sleep and which has no known cure, after suffering from glandular fever five years ago.

Now with friends Sarah Murphy, Lauryn Brogatzki and Rheanna Ainsley, she plans to take on the notorious craggy Cumbrian slopes of Scafell next month, and is taking on training walks in preparation.

“It’s the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever done, so I’m excited and nervous at the same time.” she admits.

“I never thought I would be well enough to do anything like this. But I’m one of the very lucky ones.

“I still have to be very careful about monitoring my energy, and I still get good days and bad days. But my health has improved enough for me to feel that I could take this challenge on, and I’m so grateful for that.”

Sophie’s illness meant that she missed a lot of school, forcing her to drop some of her GCSEs. She is now taking an A-level, after taking two last year, and hopes to start university in September and train as a midwife.

“In the early days of my illness, I remember walking the dog to the end of the road and thinking: “I can’t do this.” I was wiped out, I had to go home.

“With ME, it’s not just the extreme tiredness – there were night sweats, brain fog – where you just can’t concentrate – and muscle aches.

“As a teenager, probably the hardest thing was that my friends would be out, being normal teenagers, and I’d be at home, seeing what they were doing on social media. That was really tough.

“A massive part of having ME is the impact it has on family as well as the individual; the support of my mum and step-Dad, John, is what got me through my worst days.”

Helen Hyland, from the ME Association said: “We’re pleased to hear that Sophie feels well enough to take on this challenge, and know that she’ll take a sensible attitude, stopping when she needs to rest and giving herself plenty of time to recover afterwards.”

Conscious Breathing: The Simplest Way to Work Through Emotional Pain and Enjoy Your Life

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

I never gave much thought to my breath unless I was submerged under water for long periods without any.

Today I rely on it for more than the obvious function of keeping me alive.

Breathing has become my biggest tool and best friend.

It has become a foundation for living with conscious presence and awareness.

Breathing consciously has helped me overcome anxiety and has provided a gateway into peace.

The breath has helped me move through long buried emotions and trauma.

When I try to exert control over outside conditions, my mind speeds up, I feel anxious and fearful, and I create false scenarios of doom and destruction.

My biggest savior to this downward spiral has been breathing. Lying down, putting on some music, and beginning to breathe. Breathing in and out of my mouth. Taking in as much oxygen as possible, with no gaps between the inhalation and the exhalation.

In the past, I have resorted to other means of dealing with this anxiety of my mind. Alcohol, drugs, and excessive exercising were some of my favorites.

Today I have given all these other methods up, as they didn’t really work.

What are some of the methods you use to quiet the mind? Do they serve you? Do they actually help or make things worse?

In the past I was running away from feelings, trying to avoid the internal chaos.

Breathing helps me move through the feelings and chaos.

It sounds so simple, and it is.

Through breath work my life has transformed.

I used to be ready to defend myself at any moment. Really.

Inside my body, I felt surges of adrenalin, as if an attacker was about to kill me. I was always on high alert, ready to pounce into action.

The excessive exercise kept this adrenalin rolling at high levels all the time. I was addicted to it and almost felt like I needed it to survive.

Eighteen months ago I began conscious connected breath work. From my very first session I was hooked. This was better than drugs.

As a result of my breathing, all of my unconscious buried cellular emotion started to surface. Unpleasant blacked out memories from childhood, traumatic experiences—they all came rushing back.

It became very clear then what I had been running from. I didn’t want to face those painful feelings.

I made a commitment to myself, however, that I would continue to show up. I dropped the story. I dropped any goal of “fixing” myself and just let go.

I decided I would be willing to lie down for an hour and breathe. Whatever happened from there was what needed to happen. I dropped the “poor me” drama that this horrible trauma had happened to me and instead, I felt it.

The terror, the anger, and the pain became my companions. Welcoming them in with open arms, I breathed through them—and they passed.

I stopped, turned around, looked straight at these feelings, and took my power back.

Today, I am not on the run any more. My body doesn’t shake like it used to, and my legs aren’t constantly twitching up and down.

I can sit still.

I know now that when my mind starts to create drama, I can lie down and breathe.

The clarity comes, the peace comes, and the feelings pass. I allow them, without trying to make them be any different.

Is there something you are on the run from? Childhood abuse? A traumatic incident? Relationship heartbreak? What would happen if you faced it?

What if the resistance to facing and feeling what you are avoiding is actually worse than going through it?

What if under the mental obsession is fear, and under the fear is freedom?

The obsessions of the mind are not real.

They are fantasies created to take up mental space. Like watching a soap opera on TV, it takes us out of reality. It is a distraction.

What if you decided to turn off the TV in your mind that is creating false dramas to keep it entertained and distracted?

What would be in the space without the constant stream of mental soap operas?

What I have found in this space is presence, peace, and grace. The feeling that everything is okay right here and now.

Right here and now is all there is.

I live in Bali and have an early morning 4:00am routine that consists of making a cup of coffee, writing, breathing, meditating, and praying. I honor the ancestors, then I drive on my motorbike to yoga and practice being present in the moment as I drive.

Breathing with awareness helps me to be here now. It snaps me back into the moment.

I notice and watch the sunrise.

The early morning Balinese action is all happening on my way to yoga. The women making their offerings on the street, the children on their way to school, the dogs and chickens in the road, the men on their way to work in the rice paddies, and the local market buzzing with action—I take all this in as I drive.

These moments matter. This is what I love about my life here in Bali. The everyday moments of life as they unfold.

When in the present, gratitude erupts. Smiling inside, I feel whole, complete, and nothing else really matters.

Breathing on my scooter, on a bus, while waiting in a line, I take five conscience breaths. Sometimes I count to five on the inhalation and count to five on the exhalation.

This breathing practice comes with me everywhere I go.

We all have the gift of breath. Use it. Become conscious of it.

Turn off the mental TV and see what is truly there: A stunning sunset. Colourful flowers. Birds soaring. A happy child smiling.

These moments are like snapshots that will never again be repeated. Missing these moments is missing life.

Today we have a conscious choice to wake up out of the fog, to wipe off the lenses, and see through the haze.

The breath is our anchor. Use it to connect, to breathe through feelings without having to change them.

Breathe into the emotions that scare you and allow them to come. Welcome them with open arms, and they will pass.

The only way out is through, opening the doorway to presence and freedom.

Breathing is our ticket in to the present, our passage through the buried trauma of the past, and our vehicle to process difficult emotions.

Conscious breathing is life changer, accessible to all, and you can begin right now.

You're Not Fighting That War Alone

Young couple holding hands in car

One of self-loathing's most devious tactics is to isolate its victims, chasing each of us into dark lonely corners in which we feel singled out and incomparably awful, just as those who stole our self-esteem did, way back when.

They drove us into physical and mental corners, hissing Sit there until you turn into whatever I tell you to to turn into. Sit there until you hate yourself as much as I hate you. Sit there until I feel better. Sit there until you are no longer you.

Sometimes they spat their rage or mockery or hatred straight into our faces with such force that what could we possibly think except I asked for this. The way I look or talk or act drives that person to punch me, leave me, laugh at me or cry. See? Everyone else gets respect, while I am told in no uncertain terms about my own inferiority. I am the only one who wishes I was never born.

Your inner dialogues and scenery may vary. Maybe it was not cruel people but a series of misfortunes that left you blaming yourself for everything.

Each of us arrived here alone, at different times and and via different routes.

Maybe we cannot recognize each other on the street, but we're not alone now.

Not knowing how many of us are out there fighting the same battles daily makes those battles harder—just as any war would be harder for any soldier who mistakenly believed him- or herself to be fighting alone. How terrifying it would be and how dispiriting to think one was defending a harbor or hillside unaccompanied, not seeing those legions of fellow troops.

You might dislike war metaphors. But life for those of us who hate ourselves is often very much a war: So many situations that most people manage easily feel to us like ambushes, barrages, assaults. Even the simplest, most seemingly neutral things: Someone praises our shoes. We wonder: Is she joking? Does she mean my other shoes are ugly? A workday begins. We think: How many blunders will I make today? How long before they realize how unqualified I am? Why did I just make that stupid remark to Sam? Is this the day I will be fired?

Bang. Boom. Ka-blam.

Every encounter, errand, dialogue, job and even joy has its own inherent challenges, but long before we reach these these,we who hate ourselves must first wade through hot fusillades of self-doubt, shame and fear.

We fire these fusillades ourselves. We are the enemy. We are the perpetrators of this warfare, motionless as it might look, in offices and supermarkets, in cars or online.

Bushwhacking through those fusillades all day, we sometimes find the strength to say: Okay, despite my fear and shame I must get through this anyway because I must be paid and/or others depend on me and/or all moments pass and/or how else will I get home?

And every time this happens, every time we bushwhack our way through self-sabotage which is encoded into us, which is not a natural but a conditioned response, learned under traumatic circumstances—each time we do this and more or less survive, we have a victory.

Shame is the world's most isolating feeling. Shame is the belief that one's reality objectively merits scorn, horror, condemnation.

Here is news: You are not a unique freak. You are an ordinary person, the same in so many ways as anyone, but with a special problem: You were forcibly programmed to believe lies about yourself, to embrace these lies for fear of annihilation despite all opposing evidence. You are not a bad person but instead you are someone wrongly taught, wrongly raised: You are someone injured and/or brainwashed. You are conditioned to believe that you created your own pain and that no one on earth could ever understand.

We can.

The Art of Aliveness

<em>Edit Blog entry</em> The Art of Aliveness

In a recent interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Lena Dunham shared a revelation about her father’s profession as a painter. She said, “We have so many options now with media that being just being a straight up painter with brushes and paint is increasingly rare.” The classic art form has given way to variety of methods to express your artistry, although when people imagine an artist, a person with a brush and canvas often comes to mind, coupled with the assumption, “I can’t do that.”

Flora Bowley believes you can. A professional painter herself, she believes everyone has the ability to explore their creativity if they are willing to create a daily practice to exercise the muscle. The process she works in is layered acrylic painting, which can change at any time. Not having an idea when she starts and letting go of the attachment to have it look a certain way clears the way for organic play and intuition.

After realizing life as a professional painter wasn’t giving her the fulfillment she needed, she started Bloom True Workshops to teach her process to first time painters. She discovered an audience that craved a chance to bring tactile creativity into their every day lives—from moms who wanted to feed their own cup, to people who were once art school students wanting to reignite an old passion.

In her workshops Bowley says, “I want my students to get out of their heads. Getting into their feeling body is the goal so I use walking meditation, yoga, and dance breaks. We stand when we paint to get bodies moving, instead of just hands moving, and coming from their center.” Her new Creative Revolution E-Course is about how to incorporate creativity into daily life. Practices are simple and can be done at a kitchen table with different mediums and jumping off points. She said, “The art of aliveness is how to move through the day with a more creative sensibility. Noticing color, shade, presence practices.”

One exercise she offers is called Visual Riffing and you don't need anything more than a pencil and a piece of paper. A video of this exercise is available here.

  1. Take a piece of paper and draw 12 boxes.
  2. Pick a shape such as a triangle, a moon, a line and put it in every box.
  3. Now, riff off the shape. If you start with a circle, one box can be a balloon, the next can be a sun, and so on.

This exercise gives you 12 chances to do something different with the same thing and is a simple way to start using those creative muscles.

To learn more about Flora Bowley and her workshops, visit her at florabowley.com. You can also often find Flora's work in the pages of Spirituality & Health magazine.

The UK ME/CFS Biobank for biomedical research on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Multiple Sclerosis

Eliana M Lacerda, Erinna W Bowman, Jacqueline M Cliff, Caroline C Kingdon, Elizabeth C King, Ji-Sook Lee, Taane G Clark, Hazel M Dockrell, leanor M Riley, ayley Curran, Luis Nacul
The CureME Team at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Abstract

The UK ME/CFS Biobank was launched in August 2011 following extensive consultation with professionals and patient representatives. The bioresource aims to enhance research on myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), related to pathophysiology, biomarkers and therapeutic approaches.

The cohort includes 18–60 year olds, encompassing 284 clinically-confirmed ME/CFS cases, 60 neurologist-diagnosed multiple sclerosis (MS) cases, and 135 healthy individuals.

The Biobank contains blood samples, aliquoted into serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), red blood cells/granulocyte pellet, whole blood, and RNA (totalling 29,863 aliquots).

Extensive dataset (700 clinical and socio-demographic variables/participant) enables comprehensive phenotyping. Potential reuse is conditional to ethical approval.

The Neuroinflammatory Etiopathology of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)

Julian A G Glassford, independent health researcher and consultant, Shrewsbury UK

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating multi-systemic chronic illness of unknown etiology, classified as a neurological disorder by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The symptomatology of the condition appears to emanate from a variety of sources of chronic neurological disturbance and associated distortions, and chronicity, in noxious sensory signaling and neuroimmune activation.

This article incorporates a summary review and discussion of biomedical research considered relevant to this essential conception perspective. It is intended to provide stakeholders with a concise, integrated outline disease model in order to help demystify this major public health problem.

The primary etiopathological factors presented are: (A) Postural/biomechanical pain signaling, affecting adverse neuroexcitation, in the context of compression, constriction, strain, or damage of vertebral-regional bone and neuromuscular tissues; (B) Immune mediated inflammatory sequelae, in the context of prolonged immunotropic neurotrophic infection—with lymphotropic/gliotropic/glio-toxic varieties implicated in particular; (C) A combination of factors A and B.

Sustained glial activation under such conditions is associated with oxidative and nitrosative stress, neuroinflammation, and neural sensitivity.

These processes collectively enhance the potential for multi-systemic disarray involving endocrine pathway aberration, immune and mitochondrial dysfunction, and neurodegeneration, and tend toward still more intractable synergistic neuro-glial dysfunction (gliopathy), autoimmunity, and central neuronal sensitization.

Mechanisms Explaining Muscle Fatigue and Muscle Pain in Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): a Review of Recent Findings

Morris Gerwyn (1), Michael Maes (2)
1) Tir Na Nogh, Llanelli, UK
2) Deaking University, School of Medicine and Barwon Health IMPACT Strategic Research Centre, Geelong, Australia

Abstract

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Here, we review potential causes of muscle dysfunction seen in many patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) such as the effects of oxidative and nitrosative stress (O&NS) and mitochondrial impairments together with reduced heat shock protein production and a range of metabolic abnormalities.

RECENT STUDIES

Several studies published in the last few years have highlighted the existence of chronic O&NS, inflammation, impaired mitochondrial function and reduced heat shock protein production in many patients with ME/CFS. These studies have also highlighted the detrimental effects of chronically elevated O&NS on muscle functions such as reducing the time to muscle fatigue during exercise and impairing muscle contractility. Mechanisms have also been revealed by which chronic O&NS and or impaired heat shock production may impair muscle repair following exercise and indeed the adaptive responses in the striated muscle to acute and chronic increases in physical activity.

SUMMARY

The presence of chronic O&NS, low-grade inflammation and impaired heat shock protein production may well explain the objective findings of increased muscle fatigue, impaired contractility and multiple dimensions of exercise intolerance in many patients with ME/CFS.

Abstract

Post exertion malaise is one of the most debilitating aspects of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, yet the neurobiological consequences are largely unexplored. The objective of the study was to determine the neural consequences of acute exercise using functional brain imaging.

Fifteen female Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients and 15 healthy female controls completed 30 minutes of submaximal exercise (70% of peak heart rate) on a cycle ergometer.

Symptom assessments (e.g. fatigue, pain, mood) and brain imaging data were collected one week prior to and 24 hours following exercise.

Functional brain images were obtained during performance of: 1) a fatiguing cognitive task – the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task, 2) a non-fatiguing cognitive task – simple number recognition, and 3) a non-fatiguing motor task – finger tapping.

Symptom and exercise data were analyzed using independent samples t-tests.

Cognitive performance data were analyzed using mixed-model analysis of variance with repeated measures.

Brain responses to fatiguing and non-fatiguing tasks were analyzed using linear mixed effects with cluster-wise (101-voxels) alpha of 0.05.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients reported large symptom changes compared to controls (effect size ≥0.8, p<0.05). Patients and controls had similar physiological responses to exercise (p>0.05).

However, patients exercised at significantly lower Watts and reported greater exertion and leg muscle pain (p<0.05). For cognitive performance, a significant Group by Time interaction (p<0.05), demonstrated pre- to post-exercise improvements for controls and worsening for patients. Brain responses to finger tapping did not differ between groups at either time point. During number recognition, controls exhibited greater brain activity (p<0.05) in the posterior cingulate cortex, but only for the pre-exercise scan. For the Paced Serial Auditory Addition Task, there was a significant Group by Time interaction (p<0.05) with patients exhibiting increased brain activity from pre- to post-exercise compared to controls bilaterally for inferior and superior parietal and cingulate cortices. Changes in brain activity were significantly related to symptoms for patients (p<0.05). Acute exercise exacerbated symptoms, impaired cognitive performance and affected brain function in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients. These converging results, linking symptom exacerbation with brain function, provide objective evidence of the detrimental neurophysiological effects of post-exertion malaise.

10 Things I’ve Let Go and How This Has Set Me Free

“I do not fix problems. I fix my thinking. Then problems fix themselves.” ~ Louise Hay

Looking back on my life, I came to understand that perfection was my worst enemy. I was raised in an environment of high expectation, and every day in school felt like I was competing with others and fighting to be the best in class.

At the age of ten I believed I was stupid just because my brain couldn’t work out physics and math. I was good with literature, arts, and foreign languages, but that wasn’t a sign of brilliance in the Eastern-European culture that shaped me.

Much later, as a grown-up woman, I didn’t see myself as good enough, beautiful enough, smart enough, or successful enough. I felt unworthy of being loved by a wonderful man, unworthy of getting a good paycheck to reflect my skills and talents, too unworthy to apply for a tempting position at work.

My life looks completely different today, and I embrace the new me with much gratitude and joy. I love myself as I am. I am happily married and doing what I was born to do in the world.

So how did this shift happen?

I can recall myself feeling overwhelmed after a long meeting at work, and looking for some inspiration to help me release the stress and feel better. As I was searching for The Secret movie on the YouTube, I “accidentally” opened another video that went straight into my heart: You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay.

Today, I know that was no accident. The teacher shows up when the student is ready—so true! I was so touched and absorbed by that movie, I couldn’t stop watching. Listening to Louise was pure magic; every single word went straight into my heart. I finally felt home, in a space where it was perfectly okay to be me: “I love and approve myself as I am. I am whole and complete and life loves me.”

Over the next year, I discovered the work of other enlightened souls—Wayne Dyer, Byron Katie, and Don Miguel Ruiz—inviting me to precious moments of self-reflection and deep learning. Their teaching helped me to let go of old thinking patterns and cultural limiting beliefs that didn’t serve me well.

After much trial and error applying their wisdom to my life, I have found a new sense of freedom. Here’s how:

1. I’ve let go of the need to be perfect.

I am perfectly beautiful and beautifully imperfect, and this is what allows me to be me.

Perfection is an illusion—it doesn’t exist. I stopped stressing myself out trying to be perfect and now I am always aiming for “good enough.” I have learned to embrace my mistakes as much needed opportunities for growth, blessings in disguise that make me wiser. If I fail at anything, it doesn’t mean I’m a failure, because I am not what I do. Sometimes we win, sometimes we learn. We never lose.

“Your best is going to change from moment to moment: it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.” ~Don Miguel Ruiz

2. I’ve let go of the need to be busy all the time.

Being in a rush isn’t a sign of virtue. I have learned to listen to my body, and I no longer feel guilty for doing nothing. I know I sometimes need to recharge the batteries of my body and soul, and I don’t feel like I owe anyone any explanation for doing that.

If I don’t have time for myself, I make it. Watching a good movie, listening to relaxing music, reading a good book, singing, taking a walk to connect with nature—I do whatever makes my heart sing.

“I am a human being, not a human doing. Don’t equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life. You aren’t what you do. If you are what you do, then when you don’t…you aren’t.” ~Dr. Wayne Dyer

3. I’ve let go of self-criticism.

I pay attention to my inner talk; I don’t call myself names, and I treat myself with dignity and respect. I stopped telling myself things I would never tell a good friend. I am enough, whole, and complete.

I have come to understand that in life, we don’t get what we want. We get what we think we deserve. That’s why it’s necessary to believe in ourselves and see ourselves as enough and worthy of the best things life has to offer.

“You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” ~Louise Hay

4. I’ve let go of blaming.

I now know that each time I blame someone else, I am making myself a victim. Blaming others for taking my time, my money, or my love is unfair, because I always choose how much I give and to whom. No one can hurt me or upset me without my conscious (and often unconscious) consent.

Instead, I now take responsibility for the way I feel, act, and think. I am in charge of my actions, and I know my future is the result of my current choices. I am what I believe and whatever I choose to be.

“All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, it will not change you. You may succeed in making another feel guilty about something by blaming, but you won’t succeed in changing whatever it is about you that is making you unhappy.” ~Wayne Dyer

5. I’ve let go of judging.

I know that everyone is on their own journey, and my job is to focus on my own. I also know that each time I am judgmental with people, I’m reacting to something that bothers me about myself. If I believe you are mean, it means I can also be mean; how could I see that in you, otherwise?

“Placing the blame or judgment on someone else leaves you powerless to change your experience; taking responsibility for your beliefs and judgment gives you the power to change them.” ~Byron Katie

6. I’ve let go of making assumptions about what other people feel, want, or think.

I am not them, so there’s no way to know what they’re feeling and thinking.

I stopped making up imaginary scenarios and letting my mind play with me. Each time I find myself disturbed by what people do or say, I know it’s time for a reality check.

From “The Work” of Byron Katie, I’ve learned to examine the thoughts that trouble me and ask myself: “Is that true?” Many of my assumptions likely aren’t. For example, I might assume someone doesn’t like me, when really she’s just having a bad day. Or maybe she’s just shy. Not everyone is the same.

The moment I realize I can’t know what this person thinks, simply because I am not her, my mind gets clear and I am able to meet her with an open heart.

“I found that my unquestioned assumptions were the cause of all war and all peace in my world.” ~Byron Katie

7. I’ve let go of competing with others.

I now know that my need to fight is nothing but my ego’s scream for self-validation. I don’t need anyone to lose any game so that I can feel good about myself. I love harmony, collaboration, and win-wins.

I’ve stopped comparing myself to others. I choose to connect with people from a place of love instead of fear, and I believe in abundance. I choose to believe that we live in a supportive Universe, where there is enough of everything and for everyone, including myself.

“Love is cooperation rather than competition.” ~Dr. Wayne Dyer

8. I’ve let go of chasing happiness.

I no longer project my happiness into an imaginary future, hoping that someday, when I have that job, that house, that car, that success, I will be happy. I have learned to find happiness in the small pleasures of life, and I embrace the only reality that is, the present moment, with gratitude and much joy.

I stopped witing for the weekends to feel like living because each day is a gift and every single moment is precious and equally important.

The day I shifted my focus from stressed to blessed, everything changed. I am thankful for everything I am and for everything I have: a healthy body and mind; a loving family; a few genuine, last longing friendships I’ve made over time; and a job I love and believe in.

“I have noticed that the Universe loves gratitude. The more grateful you are, the more goodies you get.” ~Louise Hay

9. I’ve let go of worrying about the future.

I accept that there are things in life that I cannot control, no matter how hard I might try. Each time I find myself worrying, I keep telling myself “Time will tell.”

I might not always get what I want, but I know I always get what I need. I trust the flow of life, and choose to believe we live in an intelligent Universe, where everything unfolds perfectly. Sometimes in life, even the time needs time.

“Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don’t have to like it…it’s just easier if you do.” ~Byron Katie

10. I’ve let go of pleasing others.

I no longer seek external validation so that I can feel liked or accepted. Worrying about what others think is a waste of time. Other people’s opinion of me is all about them and what they see in me, filtered through their lenses; it has zero to do with me.

I’ve stopped expecting others to give me what I wasn’t giving myself: love, care, and attention. Loving myself as a whole—body, mind, and soul—is not selfish. I keep my cup full of self-love, and I take good care of my needs and my heart’s desires.

I have learned how to make powerful choices for my highest good without worrying about disappointing people. People disappoint themselves by setting expectations for who they want me to be or what they want me to do.

Saying no to things we don’t want to do is a learned practice and a sign of self-care. If it sounds like a “should,” I don’t do it. I go for the things that feel like a want. My wants come from myself, instead of being imposed on me by others. I always choose how I am spending my precious time and with whom. I know my time is my life, and it’s never coming back.

My life is about me and I have the right to make my own choices. Life is to be lived, not existed, and I choose to live it authentically, with no apologies and no regrets.

“Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.” ~Don Miguel Ruiz

My self-transformation into the mindful person I am today didn’t happen overnight. It’s been an ongoing process that required continuous inner work.

Today, I am still a student at School of Life, and every day is a great opportunity for new learning. I know that I have the power to create my own reality, by the way I think. So I make sure I nourish my mind with healthy thoughts, knowing my mind has power.

And now, I would like to hear from you. Are you holding on to any of these things? What’s preventing you from letting them go?
